Your Career Path

Starting out on your own can be a scary prospect. What will I do? Where will I find a job? Will I have enough money for rent? Will I be happy? These are all questions that plague the mind of new adults everywhere. Though it is sometimes possible to get a job right out of high school installing tankless water heaters, many people set themselves off down the career path of their choice by receiving training in their chosen field. Here are some things you can do from Plano that can help jump start your career.

Collin County Community College

If you're interested in a career in service or industry, your best bet is to attend a community college rather than a university, which focuses more on training Riverside bankruptcy lawyers and other white collar professionals. The Spring Creek campus in Plano has student dorms while the smaller campus attached to Allen high school does vocational training. You can take an associate degree here or train in a practical skill like accounting, theater, fine arts, medical services, real estate, computers, criminal justice or cooking.

Southern Methodist University

Those of you who are interested in office work for companies like SEO Canada or in teaching others, will need a university degree. Your only option if you don't want to leave Plano is to attend the small Southern Methodist University campus in town. SMU is a private institution with several schools: business, humanities and science, law, arts, theology, education, and engineering, so it pretty much covers all the bases. Current grants include research in archaeology, paleontology, biliteracy, computer crime, and micropropulsion.

Aladdin Beauty College

Potential cosmetologists will find their home at the Aladdin Beauty College of Plano, which teaches hair, makeup, and nail care that could see you working in a local Plano barber shop or giving expensive pedicures atop the iron keel of a luxury cruise ship. Practical instruction is the order of the day here, as the school maintains a salon in which students can practice their skills on real customers.

Correspondence Courses

There are of course, many more options available if you're willing to commute into Dallas, which is made easy by the DART regional transit system. If you're not, though, you have one other option. Many major universities offer students the opportunity to take courses through correspondence, which would be a great way to practice of you're planning a career in online software project collaboration. Some universities, like the University of Phoenix and Athabasca University, are purely online and will tailor your program to suit your needs. The same is true of distance educators for the trades, like MacTech and Distance Ed, which you probably see advertised on TV all the time.
